Father Norman Fischer
Rock Star For God
Father Norman Fischer (Aug 20, 1973 – July 15, 2024) was a transformative figure in Lexington’s Catholic and broader community. Raised on a tobacco and cattle farm in Perryville by an African‐American father and Filipino mother, he built a life of empathetic service rooted in family, faith, and art.
Ordained in 2000 as the first Black Filipino priest in the Diocese of Lexington, Fr. Fischer served with warmth and creativity at St. Peter Claver Church (his parish since 2006) and as chaplain at Lexington Catholic High School. A gifted preacher, singer, painter, and even occasional rapper, he used his energy and authenticity to bridge cultural and racial divides—often calling himself a “Rock Star for God”, spreading smiles and attention to all.
Under his leadership, St. Peter Claver saw parish membership soar by 50% and culminated in a stunning sanctuary build in 2023, celebrating diversity and faith through art honoring Black saints and people with disabilities. He also served as president of the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus, using his position to elevate racial justice and community empowerment.
His influence extended well beyond church walls: youth loved his “Energizer Bunny” enthusiasm, and he supported all ministries, especially those focused on helping the marginalized, with dedication. At Lexington Catholic, he was a beloved mentor, always cheering at games, counseling students in crisis, and fostering connections across schools and faiths.
In 2024, Lexington honored him with a Grassroots Black Leadership Award for his tireless advocacy for racial equity and justice. Many, from governors to students and local activists, noted that his wide smile, inclusive presence, and capacity to bring people together made him a pillar of the community.
In all he did, Fr. Fischer embodied his favorite motto: “God doesn’t ask for much. God asks for everything”—and he gave it. His legacy lives on through the vibrant, diverse church he helped cultivate, the young lives he shaped, and the initiatives that bear his influence.
